目犍连尊者

目犍连尊者是佛陀的十大弟子之一。为摩揭陀国王舍城人外拘律陀村人,婆罗门种。生得容貌端正,自幼与舍利弗交情甚笃,同为外道删阇耶.毗罗尼之弟子,各领  250  徒众。后受舍利弗的引导,对佛法生起好要心,带着所有的弟子跟随释迦牟尼佛出家修行。尊者在七天内证阿罗汉果,并证得六神通,神足轻举,能飞遍十方,故称“神通第一”。证果后,尊者运用神通力获知母亲在饿鬼道受苦,为了救母亲,按照佛陀的教导,在在七月十五设盂兰盆供奉十方僧众,以三宝功德之力、众僧威神之力,救度母亲。由此,佛教有「盂兰盆节」。目犍连一生不知疲倦地弘扬佛法、降伏外道,遭到外道的嫉妒,一次他经过伊私阇梨山

下,被裸形外道看到,就从山上推下乱石,目犍连活活地被压死。

 

Maudgalyana

 

Maudgalyana born in a Brahmin family of Kolita was one of the closest disciples, the second of the two foremost disciples of Lord Buddha Shakyamuni and also,

the most accomplished of all Buddha’s disciples in the achievement of various supernormal powers developed through his meditation. His abilities included being

able to use mind-reading for such things as detecting lies from truths, transporting himself from his body into the various realms of existence, and speaking with

ghosts and gods; and he was also known to be able to walk through walls, on water, flying through the air and moving with a speed comparable to the speed of light.

Maudgalyana had obtained the six penetrations and he could speak with the deceased in order to explain to them their conditions and give them an understanding of their own suffering, so that they may be released from it or come to terms with it. Maudgalyana was able to use his powers of mind-reading in order to give good advice to his students so they could attain results quickly.

Maha maudgalyana wished to repay the kindness of his parents and so he used his psychic powers and saw his deceased mother reborn in the realm of the hungry ghosts who was having no food or drink and was just skin and bones. He felt deep sadness and so he filled a bowl with food and water and went to the particular realm to help his mother. As soon as she held the bowl, took the food in her hands and before she could eat it, the food turned into burning coals. Maha Maudgalyana cried out and wept sorrowfully and quickly returned to the Buddha to ask for his advice.

The Buddha told Maudgalyana: “The fifteenth day of the seventh month is the Pravarana day for the assembled Sangha of the ten directions. For the sake of fathers and mothers of the seven generations of the past, as well as for the fathers and mothers of the present who are in distress, you should prepare an offering of clean basins full of hundreds of flavours and the five fruits, and other offerings of incense, oil, lamps, candles, beds, and bedding, all the best of the world to the great virtuous assembled Sangha of the ten directions. On that day, all the holy assembly whether in the mountain practicing Dhyana Samadhi or obtaining the four fruits of the way, or walking beneath trees, or using the independence of the six penetrations to teach and transform sound hearers and those enlightened to conditions; or those who are provisionally manifesting as Bhikhus when in fact they are great Bodhisattvas on the tenth ground - all complete in pure precepts and ocean-like virtue of the holy way - should gather in a great assembly and all of like-minded to receive the pravarana food.”

Maudgalyana died a horrible death when he was travelling in Magadha. It was said that he was either stoned to death by cultists or killed by robbers. The Buddha explained that Maudgalyana had murdered his parents in a previous life - one of the 5 heinous crime and therefore, it is inevitable for him to experience the heavy karma. Buddha said that even supernormal powers will be of little or no use to protect oneself from one’s heavy karma when it ripens.

舍利弗尊者

佛陀十大弟子中,有“智慧第一”美誉的舍利弗,出身婆罗门家庭, 父亲是当时很有名的论师,母亲怀胎时就有异于常人的智慧,据说这是 受胎儿的影响。舍利弗八岁的时候便升上论师宝座,语惊四座,受到诸 大论师的佩服及国王的赞叹欢喜。

在某个因缘下,舍利弗因为受到阿说示(马胜比丘)威仪的感化,从听闻“诸法因缘生,诸法因缘灭”的缘起道理,间接知道了佛陀,因此与好友目犍连相约,共同率领二百五十名弟子,一同到竹林精舍皈投佛陀座下。舍利弗智慧第一,常代佛说法。当佛的侍者有二十年之久,佛称赞他是众生的生母。僧团碰到些棘手的问题,都由舍利弗来解决。当提婆达多叛佛后,僧团弟子中有少数信仰不坚定的人受到他的威胁利诱而动摇而跟随他离开僧团。舍利弗知道后,教诫这群弃舍佛陀的弟子,后这群比丘知错求忏悔,重回僧团。因此,舍利弗在僧团中备受尊敬。 

  

有一次佛陀在毗离城附近的森林中说法后,向弟子宣布三个月后就要入

涅槃。舍利弗听到这消息非常难过,并在禅定中思维:过去的诸佛,

上首弟子,都在佛陀以前入涅槃。我是佛陀的上首弟子,应先佛陀而进

入涅槃。他的这一想法,得到佛陀同意后,就回到故乡迦罗臂拿迦村,

拜见了百岁的老母亲后,就在诞生的房中进入涅槃。

Sariputra

Sariputra was a Brahmin who had already set forth a life of a spiritual ascetic when he encountered the teachings of the Buddha. Sariputra and his close friend Maha Maudgalyana, another wandering ascetic both renounced the world on the same day and became disciples of the sceptic Sanjaya Belatthaputta before converting to Buddhism.

After hearing the Buddha’s teachings from a monk named Assaji, Sariputra seek out the Buddha and became a follower of his teachings. Once a mischievous yaksha attempted to irritate Sariputra by striking him on the head but due to his great spiritual mastery, the result of the strike was perceived as only a light breeze and so he was not hurt.

Sariputra often preached the Dharma with the Buddha’s approval and was given the title of “General of the Dharma” for his propagation of the teachings and was regarded as the founder of the Abhidharma.

The Buddha would frequently merely suggest a topic and Sariputra would teach a sermon on it in detail and thereby, won the Buddha’s approval. He was held as the supreme example of the perfect disciple who had risen to mastery and perfection in noble virtue, noble concentration, noble perception, and noble deliverance.

Sariputra was one of the most highly praised disciples and on at least one occasion the Buddha declared him to be a true spiritual son, foremost among those who possessed wisdom and his chief assistant in “turning the Wheel of the Dharma.” He was considered by the Buddha as inferior only to himself in wisdom. His greatest exhibition of wisdom followed the Buddha’s descent from Tavatimsa to the gates of Sankassa, which none but Sariputra could answer.

The Buddha predicted in the third chapter of the Lotus Sutra that Sariputra would become a Buddha named “Flower Glow.”

四臂观音

四臂观音是佛菩萨之菩提心所化现,也是雪域西藏的守护神。藏人由老 至幼家家户户,皆吟诵其六字大明咒:“嗡嘛呢叭咪吽”。四臂观音与 文殊菩萨、金刚手菩萨,合称三族姓尊.代表大悲、大智、大力,为密 乘行者人人必修的法门。

 

本尊身颜洁白如月,头戴五佛冠,发黑色结髻,中央二手合掌於胸前, 捧有摩尼宝珠,右手持水晶念珠。左手拈八瓣莲花与耳际齐,面貌寂静含笑。以菩萨慧眼凝视众生,凡被其观者尽得解脱。全身花蔓庄严, 双跏趺坐於莲花月轮上,身发极大五彩光,明朗照耀。每一庄严皆有所表:一头表通达法性,四臂表四无量心,身白色表自性清净无垢,不为烦恼、所知二障所障。头戴五佛冠表五智,发黑色表不染,五色天衣表五方佛,双跏趺表不住生死,手印表不住涅盘。又中央二手合掌于胸前,表智慧与方便合一双运,另右手持水晶念珠,表每拨一珠即救度一众生出脱轮回,左手持莲花,表清净无恼。

 

佛经中讲:六字大明咒之利益及功德非常大,持六字大明咒,可以消除病苦、刑罚、非时死之恐惧、寿命增加、财富充盈,即使命终之时,通往下道诸门亦得而封闭,得以人、天之神受生,接触佛法,功德利益,不可胜数。

 

Four-Armed Chenrezig

Chenrezig is renowned as the Buddha of Compassion, an embodiment of compassion of all the Buddhas. He may be the most popular of

all Buddhist deities except for Buddha himself - he is beloved throughout the Buddhist world. He is known by different names in different

lands:

Chenrezig is known by different names in different lands: Avalokiteshvara in the ancient Sanskrit language of India, Kuan-yin in China and Taiwan, Kannon in Japan.

Chenrezig is considered the patron Bodhisattva of Tibet, and his meditation is practiced in all the great lineages of Tibetan Buddhism. The beloved King Songsten Gampo was believed to be an emanation of Chenrezig, and some of the most respected meditation masters like the Dalai Lamas and Karmapas, who are considering living Buddhas, are also believed to be emanations of Chenrezig.

The 6 syllable mantra - Om Mani Padme Hung is the manifestation of the compassion containing all the 84,000 teachings of all the

Buddhas. Whether one recites the mantra loudly or silently, it invokes his powerful benevolent attention. Just by looking at the written

form of the mantra is said to have the same effect, and the mantra is often carved onto stones, walls and places where people can see them.

Chenrezig sits on a lotus and the flat disc of the moon, with another moon disc behind him, reflecting his total purity. Two of his four arms are joined in the prayer position holding the wish fulfilling gem. In his other left hand, he holds a lotus flower and in his other right hand, a crystal mala which he is using to count the repetitions of his mantra, Om Mani Padme Hung which liberates all beings from suffering. He wears the silks and ornaments of a Bodhisattva representing all his special qualities, and the soft skin of an antelope over his shoulder, symbolizing his complete freedom from violence.

The four arms and hand signify the four immeasurables: immeasurable loving kindness, immeasurable compassion, immeasurable joy, and immeasurable equanimity. Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Boundless Compassion is the very embodiment and realization of the four immeasurables. The four immeasurables are the vehicles through which Chenrezig benefits beings.”

Every person whose heart is moved by love and compassion, who deeply and sincerely acts for the benefit of others without concern for fame, profit, social position, or recognition expresses the activity of Chenrezig.
