Gau

Followers of Tibetan Buddhism make use of a type of prayer box known as a Gau (sometimes spelled “Ghau”). Gau amulets are also found in Nepal, Mongolia and Bhutan. Most are made of silver, but gold, brass and other metals may also be used. An ornate pattern is usually engraved on the box, as well.

The Gau is used within this tradition as an amulet - a ritualistic object believed to provide protection from evil. A Gau box is often embedded with semi-precious or precious stones or coral. Turquoise and red coral are especially favored in the design of Tibetan prayer boxes. Other gems used often by the Tibetan silversmith are amber, lapis lazuli carnelian, garnets, amethyst, and even rubies, sapphires and emeralds.

The Gau is usually worn around the neck and hung close to the heart. Within it is placed a scroll upon which is written or printed a prayer or sacred symbol. These scrolls are typically prepared and blessed by a Buddhist priest. In this use, the Gau is not unlike a transportable shrine. In lieu of a prayer, the Gau might also be used as a container for holding herbs, stones or other objects believed to have protective powers.

The Tibetan Buddhist might also place an image of Buddha or other deity inside the prayer box. A Gau might even be designed with an opening that allows the person to view the image throughout the day. Alternatively, a cast form of the deity may ornate the surface of the Gau.

The Memorial Hall of His Holiness Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche

The memorial hall of His Holiness Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche will be positioned at the 2nd level and on the front main entrance

of the hall.

Rinpoche was a great master of noble qualities who had fully accomplished Bodhicitta and Supreme faith in this lifetime.

After the Chinese Revolution, he tirelessly turned the Wheel of Dharma to benefit countless sentient beings and at the same

time, he built Larung Gar Sertha Buddhist Institute and taught the Great Perfection and the 5 Big Treatises to numerous people.

In 1984, Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche officiated the opening ceremony of Chi Dang Monastery and many great masters, sangha and

lay people came to join in the celebration that lasted for 3 days which was also celebrated and praised by the heavenly deities.

On the 1st day of the opening ceremony, Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche sat on the throne and while gazing into the eastern horizon, he saw the radiance blazing of the sun and said: “This is an auspicious sign that Chi Dang Monastery will become a beacon of Dharmic light that will radiate far and wide to benefit countless sentient beings.”

He also encouraged people to make pilgrimages to this holy land for immeasurable accumulations of merits and purification of negative karma.

His noble qualities and inexhaustible energy in turning the dharma wheel to benefit innumerable sentient beings is unsurpassable and admirable.

The purpose for building this memorial shrine hall is to let people commemorate the great qualities of His Holiness Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche and continue to venerate this Great Being.
